Do you know the history of Family Day?

Alberta was the first province in Canada to establish a holiday in February specifically for families. In 1990, Alberta passed the Family Day Act — introducing the third Monday of every February as Alberta Family Day. The holiday quickly gained popularity in Alberta and other provinces soon followed suit, including Ontario.

Family Day was first celebrated in Ontario on February 18th, 2008. The holiday was introduced by then Premier Dalton McGuinty as a way to provide Ontarians with an extra day off to spend with their loved ones and enjoy each other's company. The holiday has since become a beloved tradition in the province, with many families taking advantage of the day to participate in fun activities, such as skiing, ice-skating, and sledding.

In addition to providing families with a day to bond and have fun together, Family Day also has an important economic impact on the province. The holiday has been credited with boosting the tourism industry in Ontario, as families flock to ski resorts, ice-skating rinks, and other attractions on the holiday.

Although Family Day is a relatively new holiday in Ontario, it has quickly become a beloved tradition for families across the province. The holiday provides an extra day for families to spend together, enjoy each other's company, and participate in fun activities, and it also has a positive impact on the local economy. Whether you choose to spend your Family Day skiing, ice-skating, or simply enjoying each other's company, this holiday is a great opportunity to strengthen your family bonds and create lasting memories.
